PFAS and Lead in Tap Water: What Filters Are Actually Certified to Reduce

Two contaminants drive most water-filter purchases in 2026: lead and PFAS. This guide covers where each comes from, what the federal limits are, and — the part that matters — which certifications a filter needs for its reduction claims to be verifiable.
Lead: it comes from pipes, not the treatment plant
Most lead in drinking water doesn't come from your water utility — it leaches from lead service lines and older plumbing, solder, and fixtures between the main and your tap. That's why two neighbors on the same water system can have very different lead levels. The EPA has stated there is no known safe level of lead exposure, which is why lead reduction is one of the most-tested claims in filtration.
Which certifications cover lead
Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (health effects) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) with a listed lead-reduction claim. The listing will show the tested reduction — for example, a performance data sheet may list 99%+ reduction at both pH 6.5 and pH 8.5 test conditions. If a filter claims lead reduction but names no standard, treat the claim as unverified.
PFAS: the "forever chemicals"
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large class of manufactured chemicals used in nonstick coatings, water-resistant fabrics, firefighting foam, and industrial processes. They persist in the environment and have been detected in drinking water supplies across the country. The EPA has set enforceable National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for six PFAS compounds — including PFOA and PFOS, with maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion — and public water systems are on a compliance timeline.
Which certifications cover PFAS
Look for PFOA/PFOS reduction claims under NSF/ANSI 53 via the P473 protocol, or NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis systems. These are the test protocols written specifically for these compounds. A filter that is "great for PFAS" with no P473 or 58 listing is asking you to take its word for it — and on this site, that's not enough.
Step one is always the water report
Before shopping by contaminant, check whether you actually have one. Your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report (search "[your city] consumer confidence report") lists detected contaminants and their levels. The EPA also maintains public data on PFAS occurrence. If your report shows no lead service lines in your area and no PFAS detections, a simpler certified system may cover everything you need — there's no reason to pay for certified claims against contaminants that aren't in your water.

A note on how we write about contaminants
You'll notice this site never says a filter "protects your family" or "keeps you healthy." Those are health claims, and we don't make them — we report what independent certifiers tested and what the results were. A filter certified to reduce lead reduces the concentration of lead in the water that passes through it, per the test protocol. That's a checkable fact, and it's the only kind we publish.
