Common questions

What's the difference between "NSF certified" and "tested to NSF standards"?

"NSF certified" means an accredited certifier (NSF, WQA, or IAPMO) tested the product and lists it in their public database with the specific claims it passed. "Tested to NSF standards" means a lab ran the test protocol — useful, but not the same as certification, and the results aren't independently listed. We treat the two differently on this site. Which filter type reduces the most contaminants?

On certified claims, reverse osmosis systems certified to NSF/ANSI 58 cover the broadest list — TDS, lead, fluoride, arsenic, and (with P473) PFOA/PFOS. Countertop carbon systems certified to NSF/ANSI 53 cover an impressive range for a no-install product, but they don't match RO's breadth. See the system-level comparison.

Do I need a filter that reduces PFAS?

Check your water utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report first — it lists what's actually in your water. The EPA has set enforceable drinking-water limits for six PFAS compounds including PFOA and PFOS. If your report flags them, look for systems with certified PFOA/PFOS reduction claims under NSF/ANSI 53 (P473) or NSF/ANSI 58. Our PFAS and lead guide explains what to look for.

How much does a water filter really cost over 10 years?
